The Northland’ refers to those countries which lie beside the North Pole. In this area during winter, the days are shorter and the nights are longer. The land is almost covered with snow. People use sledge pulled by reindeer for the purpose of travelling. Children wear fur coats.

Answer:
Saint Peter asked the old lady for a cake to eat. The old lady became ready to give him a single cake. But she did not want to give him a big cake. So she made smaller and smaller cake. Owing to her greed, she could not give him that too.

संत पीटर ने बूढ़ी महिला से खाने को एक रोटी माँगी । वह महिला उन्हें एक रोटी देने को तैयार हो गई । लेकिन वह उन्हें एक बड़ी रोटी नहीं देना चाहती थी। अतः उसने छोटी से छोटी रोटी बनाई । लेकिन अपने लालच के कारण वह उस को भी नहीं दे पाई ।

Answer:
Being angry by the woman’s selfishness, Saint Peter cursed her to punish. As a punishment he cursed her to convert into a woodpecker. Now she had to live in the tree and get her scanty food by boring all day in the hard, dry wood.

उस औरत की स्वार्थपरता से नाराज होकर संत पीटर ने उसे एक कठफोड़वा पक्षी के रूप में बदल जाने का शाप देकर सजा दी । कठफोड़बा के रूप में उसे अब पेड़ों पर रहना पड़ता था और सूखी – कठोर लकड़ी में सूराख करके थोड़ा सा भोजन जुटाना पड़ता था ।

I think if the old lady had known who Saint Peter really was, she would not have been so ungenerous. She would have entertained him in a well manner instead.

Answer:
A legend is a story that is handed down from the past through popular oral tradition. Legends are generally related to unreliable account of some actually or possibly historical person, like saint, monarch, etc. This poem is a legend because it is related to the life of Saint Peter who was made angry by a selfish old lady and as a result she was changed into a woodpecker by him.

एक पौराणिक कथा वह कहानी होती है जो कि अतीत से मौखिक परम्परा के रूप में चली आ रही हो । ये कथाएँ सामान्यतया किसी वास्तविक या सम्भावित ऐतिहासिक व्यक्ति, जैसे संत, राजा इत्यादि के अविश्वसनीय वर्णन से सम्बन्धित होती हैं । यह कविता एक पौराणिक कहानी है क्योंकि यह संत पीटर के जीवन से सम्बन्धित है, जिन्हें एक स्वार्थी वृद्ध महिला द्वारा नाराज कर दिया गया था तथा परिणाम स्वरूप उसे ( उस बूढ़ी महिला को) उनके द्वारा कठफोड़वा पक्षी में बदल दिया गया था ।

Answer:
‘A Legend of the Northland’
Once St. Peter was travelling round the world for his preachings. One day he reached the door of an old woman’s cottage in Northland. She was making cakes. St. Peter was almost faint with hunger and travel. He asked her for a cake. She did not want to give a big cake, so she made smaller and smaller cakes.

But she was so selfish that she could not part with even a thin wafer like cake. St. Peter became angry at such a selfish behaviour of that lady. He turned her into a woodpecker. Now she has to get her little food by boring and boring into hard and dry wood.

नॉर्थलैण्ड की एक पौराणिक कथा

Answer:
The woman was very selfish. She thought about herself only. Every time when she made a cake to give, it seemed her too large to be given away. So she could not part away with any cake.

वह स्त्री बहुत स्वार्थी थी । वह मात्र अपने ही बारे में सोचती थी । प्रत्येक बार जब भी उसने देने के लिए रोटी बनाई, वह उसे इतनी बड़ी लगी कि उसे दिया नहीं जा सकता था । इसलिए वह कोई रोटी नहीं दे पाई ।
