II. जब हम कहते कुछ हैं और उसका तात्पर्य कुछ और होता है जो प्रायः हमारी कही हुई बात का उल्टा होता है, तो वह irony (व्यंग्य) कहलाता है । जब कोई कुछ गलती करता है और आप कहते हैं, “ ओह ! बहुत समझदारी का काम किया !” तो यह व्यंग्य होता है । ‘समझदारी की कमी’ दिखाने के लिए आप ‘समझदार’ शब्द का प्रयोग करते हैं । प्रायः प्रयोग में आने वाली irony (व्यंग्य) से युक्त अभिव्यक्तियाँ हैं :

1. It was about 7 a.m. Although it was cold and windy evening, I had to go to theatre for rehearsal. I was packing props in my bag. Suddenly an intruder broke into my house. He threatened me with a gun and asked me a few questions. He intended to kill me and take on my indentity to escape from the police. The intruder had a body structure like mine. His voice was cultured. His plan was to murder me. He was very cautious and careful while talking to me. He told me that he had murdered someone before and was not afraid to be hanged.
During the conversation, I thought of a false story to outwit him. I told him that I had also murdered a person and the police were still searching me. So I had already planned to disguise myself to run away without being caught. I offered him to escape with me in my car. He partly believed me. But to remove his doubts, he decided to open the door to look out for the police. I opened the door of cupboard. As he looked into it, I pushed him in the cupboard and locked him in it. Then I got relief.
2. Enact the play in the class. Pay special attention to words given in italics before a dialogue. These words will tell you whether the dialogue has to be said in a happy, sarcastic or ironic tone and how the characters move and what they do as they speak. Read these carefully before you enact the play.

The Intruder – The Intruder is a person with a criminal background. He has murdered someone and the police are after him. He wears flashy clothes. He is good at imitating others. He makes a plan to kill Gerrard and take on his identity. He has found out much about Gerrard to make this work easy. He is too confident of himself. He thinks himself very smart and clever. But in fact he is a fool. He is trapped by Gerrard.

We see that seeing an intruder in his house, Gerrard does not show any sign of fear or helplessness. He talks to him friendly. During the course of their talks, he finds out many things about this uninvited guest. In the end, he locks the intruder very cleverly in a cupboard. All these things prove that he is very calm and nonchalant.

An intruder plans to kill Gerrard and take on his identity. Gerrard behaves him in a very cool manner. He tells him that he is a criminal and the police are after him. He asks him to see through the door for the police. The door, in fact, is of a cupboard. As the intruder turns his head, he pushes him into the cupboard and locks the door quickly. Thus, Gerrard’s life is saved due to wit (intelligence).

Gerrard says this as a general statement. But it proves absolutely true in case of this play. Gerrard keeps the intruder busy in talks. During the course of talks, he weaves such a trap around him (the intruder) that he gives him a push into the cupboard and locks him in it. Caught in the conversation, the intruder delays killing Gerrard and in the end he finds no chance to do it.

घुसपैठिया : बचकर भागते-भागते मैं ऐलिसबरी पहुँचा था । उसी स्थान पर मैंने तुम्हें कार में देखा । दो और लोगों ने तुम्हें देखा और बात करने लगे। मैंने (उस बात को ध्यानपूर्वक सुना। ऐसा लगता है तुम कुछ अजीब हो – एक प्रकार के रहस्यमयी व्यक्ति ।

घुसपैठिया : ( उसकी बात को महत्व न देते हुए) तुम अपनी चीजें मँगवाने के लिए फोन पर आदेश देते हो और कभी-कभी तुम अचानक बाहर चले जाते हो और उसी प्रकार ( अचानक ही ) वापिस भी आ जाते हो। ये बिल्कुल वही चीजें हैं जो मैं करना चाहता हूँ । तुम्हारे बारे में सुनना मेरे लिए सर्वाधिक भाग्यशाली मौकों में से एक मौका था ।
जिरार्ड : स्पष्ट है कि तुममें यह पूछने की इतनी बुद्धि नहीं है कि मैं क्यों इस रहस्यमय चोंगे को पहनकर समय बिताता हूँ। (मैं यह रहस्यमय जीवन क्यों जी रहा हूँ ।)
घुसपैठिया : (गोली चलाने के लिए तैयार होते हुए) जैसे कि मैंने पहले कहा था कि, इस बातचीत से मैं ऊब गया हूँ ।
जिरार्ड : मूर्ख मत बनो । यदि तुम गोली चलाओगे तो तुम्हारा फाँसी पर चढ़ना निश्चित हो जाएगा । यदि स्वयं के रूप में नहीं तो विन्सेन्ट चार्ल्स जिरार्ड के रूप में ( फाँसी पर चढ़ना निश्चित है ) ।
घुसपैठिया : यह क्या ( बात ) है ?

जिरार्ड : ओह, मूर्खता मत करो । स्वयं देख लो ।
(जिरार्ड दरवाज़ा खोलता है और एक ओर हट जाता है । घुसपैठिया इसे देखने के लिए सामने झुकता है, वह जिरार्ड के बराबर में है लेकिन उसकी रिवॉल्वर तैयार है। जैसे ही वह अपना सिर घुमाता है जिरार्ड उसके हाथ से रिवॉल्वर गिराते हुए उसे अलमारी में धकेल देता है । वह एक झटके से दरवाजे को बन्द करके ताला लगा देता है, रिवॉल्वर उठाता है और फोन के पास जाता है, जहाँ वह बन्दूक को अलमारी के दरवाजे की ओर तानकर खड़ा हो जाता है ।) घुसपैठिया ( दरवाजा खड़खड़ाता है और चिल्लाता है) मुझे यहाँ से बाहर निकालो!
जिरार्ड : (फ़ोन पर बात करता है) हैलो । हाँ, बोल रहा हूँ। अफ़सोस है कि आपको रिहर्सल के लिए साजोसामान समय पर नहीं दे सकता हूँ, मेरे साथ कुछ परेशानी हो गई है- काफ़ी रोचक। मैं सोचता हूँ कि मैं इसे ( परेशानी वाली घटना को ) अपने अंगले नाटक का हिस्सा बनाऊँगा । सुनो, क्या तुम हमारे मित्र सारजेन्ट को तुरन्त यहाँ आने के लिए कह सकते हो ? वह तुम्हें शायद पब्लिक बार (सार्वजनिक शराबघर ) में मिलेगा।
